Here is my PowerPoint presentation on the Evolution of the Atom. It took a long time to figure out how to embed the presentation into my blog but finally here it is.

PowerPoint Show
I prepared a PowerPoint for Content Standard SC.O.C.2.2 which states:
Research and evaluate the contributions of Dalton, Bohr, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger to the evolution of the atomic theory.

Here is the link to my edited image.

And here is my embedded image. This is my profile photo for the FSU website. I uploaded it into Photoshop Express and played around with the size and made it a black and white photo.

Crappy Graphics

I used Crappy Graphics to design the graph. It shows how math, physics and stoiciometry combine to form chemistry.
The original graph may be found at http://crappygraphs.com/user_graphs/?id=2772.
The crappy graphics site is located at http://crappygraphs.com/user_graphs/makecrap.php
Kids Zone
Since the year 2000 WV has lost ground compared to national scores in mathematics.
Compared to Utah, Arkansas and Mississippi, WV has fewer students with an IEP.I used the graphing tool in KidZone. The data was easy to put in and so was making the chart. I knew how to do charts and graphs in Excel and for simple graphs it is comperable.
The data came from the National Assessment for Educational Progress. I was surprised that Utah was one of the poorer states. I was also surprised that WV had such a small number of IEP's.

Image Capture
My graphic can be viewed at the following site:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhrwmnpv_11cmv2vsdq
I use this screen shot image in my Chem 1113 class at Fairmont State University. I used Paint to circle one of the numbers and air brushed add notes in order to see possible tools available in Paint to improve my image, for this assignment. I acquired this image by hitting the "print screen" key on my keyboard while the desired screen was selected, and then the image was pasted into Image J, a image manipulation program that is freeware. Once the file in pasted into Image J the graphic can be edited and saved in numerous formats. I chose to save this image as a .gif file; I then inserted this image into a HTML document, using Dreamweaver, and that document is used in Blackboard for my class. I have numerous screen shots of what their screen should look like as the students work an example problem in Excel. This helps the students proofread their spreadsheet as they work the example, and some really have a hard time following instructions without some sort of accompanying graphic.

Desktop Graphic
My graphic is located at:
http://www2.fairmontstate.edu/users/jweekley/EDUC6305/Population_Std_Dev.gif
I use this in CHEM 1113. This graphic is used to give students a visual representation of how to calculate the population standard deviation.
I made the initial graphic in Excel and then used Image J to manipulate it. I used this program on the recommendation of out Department Chair. It is free ware very much like Photo Shop. You can draw lines, basic shapes, text boxes, flowchart shapes, and fill with color to name a few of the tools. I liked it because it was very similar to Photo Shop and I already knew a little bit about that. I also could have used Power Point or Corel Draw.
The file I chose is a gif, is 387bytes, and is opened in Internet Explorer. I use several images in the course to show students various formulas.

FTP
I have been using the ftp space at Fairmont State for the last four years. All of the lab instructions that I use for chemistry lab are stored there with a link from Blackboard directing the students to the instructions. Here is the link for my Who Am I? video that I have stored in my ftp space.

Web Publishing
I did not like the way the Google software interfaced with my original document that was saved in Microsoft Word 2003. I had so many problems formatting the document in Google that I gave up and created a new resume in Google. I guess I need to spend more time using the Google Docs features to get better at formatting.
Here is the link to my published resume.

Who Am I?
I found Microsoft PhotoStory to be very user friendly and would not hestiate using this for a class. This type of presentation would be a different approach compared to PowerPoint presentatons. Here is the link to my story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty-yemksfFE

Communicaton Tools
I am looking forward to using SKYPE this semester, but I am apprehensive about the blog. I am sure I will catch on eventually, but would welcome any feedback from any of my classmates.
My name is Jim Weekley and I am a Chemistry Instructor at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV. This semester I am teaching 5 Chem 1105 labs. I have taught mostly lab classes while at FSU, but I have taught a few lecture classes as well. I was born in Clarksburg, WV and grew up in a "holler" in Doddridge County. I was in the U.S. Navy for 8 years, where I did chemistry control on nuclear reactors and radiation surveys, so I kind of glow at night. :) When I got out of the Navy I attended Fairmont State College receiving an B.S. in Chemistry in 2000. I went to graduate school at the University of Kentucky and received a M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2005. I taught one year at Lafayette High School in Lexington, KY prior to accepting my current job here at FSU.
